A trader made nearly half a million dollars on the ouster of Venezuela's president just before it was publicly declared, leading to inquiries about potential gains made from confidential information of American actions.

Market Movement in Forecasts

Wagers on Polymarket, a crypto-powered platform, that the Venezuelan president would be no longer in control by the close of the month surged in the time leading up to Donald Trump stated on the weekend that the Venezuelan leader had been apprehended.

One account, which became a member recently and placed four wagers, all on the Venezuelan situation, profited a total of $436K from a initial bet of $32.5K.

It remains unclear. The user had only a blockchain identifier for identification.

Probability Spikes Before Announcement

Trading information shows that participants assessed the probability of Maduro's exit at just under 7% in the afternoon of Friday, January 2nd.

But the market's assessment had increased to 11% by late Friday night and surged in the morning of Saturday, pointing to a rapid movement in positions just before the social media post was made.

"This specific wager has all the signs of a trade based on confidential knowledge," commented a financial reform advocate.

A small number of other platform users also earned tens of thousands of dollars from bets on the same outcome.

Legal Questions Emerges

Elected officials are beginning to pay attention.

Proposed legislation put forward on recently aims to prohibit government employees from participating on prediction markets if they have "insider details" related to a bet.

The industry encountered regulatory challenges under the Biden administration. However it has received a warmer welcome during the Trump presidency.

Using confidential knowledge is against the law in the stock market, but there are less oversight in the prediction market industry.

An official representative for Kalshi said their site "has clear rules against insider trading of any form."
