A fatal train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the pace and handling of the country's major public works projects.
The crash occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link built to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.
“We are going to meticulously determine the cause of this incident,” affirmed the head of state.
The official announced that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The president noted plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.
Key Undertaking of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the immediate past president, whose term concluded the prior year. This project was intimately linked to his administration's strategic agenda for the southeastern region.
Another ambitious train initiative from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to stimulate the economic fortunes of a comparatively poorer part of the country.
Project Execution and Risks Apprehensions
The building of both rail lines was overseen by the army, marking a significant increase of its role in civilian projects. They were completed at an accelerated rate, surpassing predictions to be partially inaugurated before the end of that presidency.
However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously sparked ongoing apprehensions over operational security.
- Sunday's crash was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This involves an prior collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced several non-lethal derailments.
Demands for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the leader of a primary political opposition demanded an immediate suspension in the construction and operation of all comparable projects.
This pause was suggested pending a thorough safety audit. The party stated that the tragedy "calls for immediate answers."
In response, the head of state asserted that the train had been functioning in total compliance with all operational standards. Assurances were given that the government would continue to be "responsible" in both the construction and operation of these vital projects.
